Skin Superfood: Shea Butter

Remember how your grandmother told you about the benefits of oil massage and ‘forced’ you to use ghee, malai/milk cream, etc.on your skin? You never paid attention, did you? I was pretty ignorant and then I regretted it. And the regret made me try different concoctions. Sharing my experience with one such natural ingredient- Shea Butter and how it has been doing wonders for me.

I’ve had a one-sided long term affair with acne and that made me try literally everything under the sun, only to settle for natural creams and lotions, mostly homemade. I’ve been whipping different butters and oils for a while now and hence decided to share my love for one of my favorite natural butters- Shea Butter. Also, when you whip ingredients at home, you at least know how you are treating your body. J

Whipped Shea Butter

Shea butter comes from the seeds of the fruit of Shea tree and is rich in Vitamins A, E & F. It is super rich in fatty acids and nutrients that help in collagen production. Also, it has a comedogenic rating of 0 which makes it perfect for oily-sensitive and acne prone skin.

Benefits of Shea Butter:

  1. Moisturizing

High concentration of fatty acids makes Shea butter incredibly hydrating and nourishing for the skin. Oleic, stearic, palmitic and linolenic acids in Shea butter protect and nourish the skin to prevent drying.  It also helps treat Eczema, dry scalp, chapped lips, razor burn, etc.

  1. Anti-inflammatory

The anti-inflammatory property of Shea butter makes it one of the greatest skin foods ever:

  • A condemogenic rating of 0 and high levels of Lupeol cinnamate makes shea butter work well in reducing skin inflammation and treating acne.
  • It also helps treat muscle aches and helps in muscle recovery. Toss a tub in your gym bag, already!
  • Anti-aging: Increases collagen production-> Fewer fine lines and wrinkles. Shea butter, head to toe!
  1. Sun Protection

With an SPF between 3 to 6, Shea Butter is used as a sun screen. It not only protects from the UV rays but also works wonders in healing sunburned skin.

Below are a few ways to use Shea Butter:

  1. Natural moisturizer for skin
  2. Lip balm- By itself or mixed with essential oils
  3. Under eye wrinkle cream and bag reducer
  4. Deodorant
  5. Whipped Body Butter

I like my Shea Butter whipped, with some oils.  I can’t help but slather this goodness on my face, body, and hair. I’ve been using it for over a year now, and I just can’t do with it.

Also, summers are here, did someone say sunburn?

I buy my Shea Butter from Amazon. While buying, make sure it has ‘Raw and unrefined’ mentioned on the pack. It is in solid form at room temperature and melts when you rub it between your palms.

You might want to use a very small amount because it is super thick and a little goes a long way. Once you start using it, you can try different amounts to see how much your skin needs.

Go nourish you skin!

No Bake Chocolate Oats Bar

No bake oats bar

I’m always on the lookout for healthy munchies that I can keep in my bag and carry to work. All thanks to hyperthyroidism which made me gain some 15 kgs in 3 months. Oh yeah! I suddenly started looking like a potato.

Instead of waking up to the smell of fresh coffee, I was forced to take a pill, which would leave me bloated for the rest of the day. But I’ve never been a fan of orders. I stopped taking all medicines after a month and joined the college gym. Soon I realized that wasn’t enough. Taking 4 eggs after my gyming season wasn’t really doing the job. I felt energy less, almost always. And since I was staying in a paying guest accommodation, I couldn’t use the kitchen for anything except for making tea. Oh, life! I started looking for healthy snacks which did nothing apart from leaving me broke.

Chili Chocolate Bars

High Protein Chocolate Bars

“The only balanced diet you can ever have is when you have desserts in both hands.”

For the love of desserts and healthy food, let’s put a healthy and tasty twist to a classic dessert.

High Protein Chocolate Bars

Watching Vikas Khanna’s Persimmon Chili Cobbler recipe, I decided to make a healthy dessert. And no desert is ever complete without chocolate. I REPEAT, NO DESERT IS EVER COMPLETE WITHOUT CHOCOLATE.

For my #Foodventure I decided to throw in some dark chocolate, oats, my favourite- peanut butter and some chilies (YES I SAID CHILIES); and make chili chocolate bars.  Chilies and chocolate bring out each other’s richness.

#Foodventures- Sweet and Spicy Aam Panna

Foodventures sweet & spicy

We all love mangoes, don’t we?

And now that the season of mangoes is almost here, I can’t stop dreaming about the delicious aam panna, mango chutney and mango shake. Mango as a fruit in itself is very wholesome. It lowers blood pressure, cleanses skin (IT DOES NOT CAUSE ACNE), alkalizes the whole body and has a lot of other health benefits. Need more reasons to love them?

Importance_Of_Breakfast

Do you know what skipping breakfast does to your body? It makes you hangry! Hell yeah!

Hangry is hungry + angry. 🙂

Also, skipping breakfast makes you gain weight! THAT’S TRUE.

People who skip breakfast consume more calories than anyone else. And since they consume these calories in the later part of the day, when the metabolism slows down, the fat starts depositing. Hence, weight gain. And thousand other health problems of course!

For all those who skip breakfast, they key to change this habit is to start with simple recipes that don’t need a lot of work.

Summer Delight: Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie

High Protein options for vegans

I have lost count of the number of people who have milk, tea or coffee in the morning and call it breakfast! And why? Because they don’t get time to make and eat breakfast.

How about switching off you phone for 10 mins.? Or waking up 10 mins early then you usually do?

Or maybe let’s just save time by not thinking of excuses for skipping breakfast and JUST HAVE IT!

McCain Stuffed Capsicum

I recently attended the #McCainMeetup by McCain Foods at Sheraton, Saket. There, I met some food and fashion bloggers, and got the opportunity to taste quick meals prepared by the head chef of McCain- Tushar.

While on my way back home, with Veggie Fingers, Potato cheese shots and some more yumminess from McCain foods in my bag I kept thinking of making a protein rich recipe using these. As you know, potatoes contain good levels of carbohydrates which help you keep your energy levels high. How about adding some protein to these and increasing the fat burning process also?

Detox Drinks

Detoxdiet_deepikakhosla

November has been a tough month. With working weekends & travel, I got no time to prepare meals and could only munch on nuts & fruits, occasionally. I had no option but to eat outside and my body reacted. Acidity, breakouts and what not!

However, with an advertising job come messed up schedules and therefore, detox drinks to rescue.
